Denver honored by U.S. Chamber for 'Greenprint Denver' sustainability drive - Denver Business Journal:: "The City and County of Denver has received a national award for sustainable-development initiatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Business Civic Leadership Center for the city's 'Greenprint Denver' program.

Denver is one of three U.S. communities in different size groups to win the award and one of 10 finalists.

The Siemens Sustainable Community Awards 'recognize public-private coalitions for taking on the 21st challenge of sustainable development,' says the BCLC, the U.S. Chamber's philanthropic arm. 'A sustainable community has committed to setting and achieving complementary economic, environmental, and social goals that will help build long-term competitiveness and success.'

The awards -- sponsored by Siemens Corp. -- were presented Monday night in Chicago at BCLC’s National Conference on Corporate Community Investment.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper accepted Denver's award in the large-community category.

'As we strive to create a sustainable future for the Denver community that protects the air we breathe and the water our children drink, the Siemens Sustainability Award is a welcome acknowledgement of our efforts to date,' Hickenlooper said in a statement.

Greenprint Denver is a city sustainability plan that aims to promote energy conservation, clean energy production and use, and conservation technologies.

BCLC made note of Denver's pilot outreach program in October 2008 in the Sunnyside neighborhood, an area of high energy-use rates, in which each home received free home recycling registration, a front-yard tree, junk mail reduction forms and a CFL porch light bulb.

Greenprint Denver's priorities for 2009 include neighborhood weatherization, renewable-energy installation, retrofit of city buildings, water conservation and 'green' building construction.

Other communities that were finalists in Denver's category were El Paso, Texas, and Riverside and San Bernardino counties, Calif.

Other winners Monday were Anaheim, Calif., in the mid-sized community category and Los Alamos County, N.M., in the small-community group"
