CFLs contaminate the environment with toxins

CFLs contaminate the environment with toxins

Each CFL light contains a neurotoxic substance, about 0.5 milligrams of Mercury. It first gets into the environment and the water and forms a very toxic substance called the methyl mercury, which is one of the most toxic chemicals known to man. It then gets into your food chain,” says Director, Toxic Links, Ravi Aggarwal.
And that's definitely not good news. Considering that exposure to mercury can damage your nervous system, kidneys, liver, cause motor skill and memory impairment and birth defects.
In fact, an estimate says that eight per cent women of childbearing age have unsafe levels of mercury in their bloodstream. And with no disposal system in place, a CFL thrown into a junkyard is putting many others at risk most commonly the rag pickers.
