Yet many LED taxiway fixture designs require extra heaters to melt snow and ice buildup, eliminating any energy savings gained over incandescent models. The LRC explored new fixture designs for LED-based blue taxiway lights that transfer heat from the LED to the fixture optics to melt snow and ice."
