Snap: "A CFL (Compact Florescent Light bulb) is just a smaller cousin of the long tubular fluorescent bulbs your used to seeing in large industrial type buildings. It contains at the base a 'starter or ballast (Rapid start ballasts simply keep the electrodes warm not requiring a starter)' a transformer that delivers high voltage (tiny lightening bolts) to the electrodes at each end of a glass tube ,shaped to coils and such in the CFL to conserve space , exciting the mercury which then fluoresces or charges the phosphorus many trace chemicals are added to the phosphorus to adjust the colour.."
