The afternoon also featured energy- based activities, including calculations on how to save money by using compact fluorescent lights instead of the typical incandescent light bulbs as well as monitoring how much energy household appliances can use even when turned off.

At the end of the day, all students received a CFL to take home as part of the school’s Energy Star “change a light, change the world” pledge. The school is also selling energy efficient holiday lights, which use 98 percent less electricity, until Monday, Dec. 10.

“We replaced all the light bulbs at my place already,” said seventh-grader Robert Gagala of Downers Grove. “They take a second to turn on, but they’re really bright.”
Grant money also was used to buy an energy bicycle, which students from the Technology Club will take around to elementary schools starting in December. The bicycle is connected to a board with incandescent and CFL bulbs that a rider powers by pedaling said seventh-grader Elly Walsh-Rock of Downers Grove. It just takes a little work to get a bright glow from a CFL but much more strain to get illumination from a conventional bulb.

“I think it’s really cool that you’re helping the environment and teaching the next generation how to do stuff,” Elly said.
