The energy bill, compact fluorescents, and making your house look tolerable: "Today's incandescent bulbs will be illegal to sell in the US after 2012. Many people hate the looks of their typical replacement, the compact fluorescent. The New York Times ran a subjective test of lighting quality.
First, the energy bill doesn't ban incandescents as a technology. It requires a minimum energy efficiency(*) which is 25-30% better than the typical incandescent on the market today. The Philips Halogena meets those standards while still creating its light with a hot wire rather than phosphors.
The reactions of the NYT testers to the hue of the CFLs was, pardon the phrase, colorful. One of the milder comments was that skin tones looked 'embalmed"
