Sunday letters: New, energy-saving bulbs | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Opinion: Letters

Sunday letters: New, energy-saving bulbs Dallas Morning News News for Dallas, Texas Opinion: Letters: "Re: 'Sucked in by the swirl – There's a nasty little surprise hidden in the new energy bill, says Andrew Ferguson,' last Sunday Points.
In exposing the conspiracy of the compact fluorescent bulb, Andrew Ferguson declares that CFLs are unsuitable for a variety of reasons including high price, low safety and nonperformance. My own experience with CFLs for about 10 years directly contradicts his claims.
I use them with ordinary timers and in all fixtures, including in the garage year 'round. My latest batch cost just over a dollar apiece, and none have failed in a decade of use.
In fact, my earliest CFL was recently discarded, not because it burnt out, but because we got tired of looking at the lamp that held it.
Mr. Ferguson politicizes a simple advancement in technology whose obvious advantages are borne out by the numbers: drastically lower energy use, with drastically longer lifetime.
His reasons for clinging to the outdated incandescent light are idiotic in the extreme.
If President Bush has in any way promoted the responsible use of natural resources, it will be to his credit that he has sense enough to be on the right side of a no-brainer issue, which is more than I can say for the dim bulb at The Weekly Standard"
