Subject: CFL Lighting Technology for reducing Global Warming Author: Bhujangadev Tumuluri Postdate: 23 April 2008 Contents: Many countries, including Great Britain, are switching over to CFL Light bulbs, because of the need for energy savings, energy efficiency and their beneficial impact for reducing Global Warming. But the issue of disaposal of the tiny quantum of mercury in the event of a CFL accidentally breaking, has attracted stormy debates with both sides effectively putting forth their views. Some people feel that compulsory switching to CFL bulbs as propsed by President Bush"s ordiance on the subject, is an infringement on an individual"s right of choice. It is said that a tiny drop of mercury contaminates 1000 gallons of water, and those eating fish from a contaminated source are prone to serious ailments. The puiblic policies are not clear. The procedures for disposal of a broken CFL bulb are too elaborate, and need to be simplified. It also not clear why Governments, which speak of clean environment, propose coal fired power generation plants, which spew maximum amount of CO2 into the climate.

As for infringement of rights - murderers to kill people because this is very harmful to society & infringes on other people's right to life. Air pollution kills three thousand times as many people as murderers do, whilst global warming could kill many more and cause untold economic damage. Efficiency standards are perfectly justified | |
