Alternative energy centre in JNTU

The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University will begin a centre for alternative energy options from the forthcoming academic year.

JNTU will carry out research on alternative fuels, promotion of batteryoperated vehicles, development of methanol and ethanol fuels.

University officials said research students, and students pursuing mechanical and electrical engineering will work on development of cost-effective fuels.

The university is also setting up a special lab for the students to research on alternative energy sources.

“A seminar was conducted on the development of alternative fuels. We have decided to have a centre exclusively to research hydrogen as fuel, cost effective-fuels for vehicles,” said Prof D.N. Reddy, JNTU vice-chancellor.

The university has approached the department of science and technology and the All India Council for Technical Education for Rs 4 crore to set up the centre.

Five scholars will be paid by the university for research on the alternative fuels in the centre.

JNTU plans to sign MoUs with the research institutes for co-operation and collaboration.

“Currently, the cost of alternative fuels is five times more than petrol and diesel. Our focus is to make the current resources cost effective and economical.” said Mr Reddy.

University students recently conducted an exhibition on alternative fuels and battery run vehicles.
