LUMEN OUTPUT - THE KEY TO CUTTING ENERGY

The basic thought behind the brightness of LEDs is the Wattage. For example 8W is brighter than 3W. The more power used, the brighter the bulb. The amount of light output a bulb gives is measured in lumens.
Presently, to gain more light from an LED you need to increase the surface area of the heatsink (see previous article) attached to the emitter. This, however, could be a problem long forgotten. New LED development, from companies such as Luxeon, is producing LEDs which can emit 100 lumens per Watt. This number dwarfs the current output of the average LED, which is around 30 lumens per Watt.

Because of this new technology, we can achieve more light for less power. This is also a step in the right direction to achieving an LED bulb which can replace a standard halogen. Rather than increasing the surface area of a heatsink, you can use the same one, but get more light from it.

Although the technology is still expensive, and at a price which would leave no profit margin in order to be sold, once it has become more refined it should be available at an affordable price.
