E that incorporates various activities and so, there are plenty of opportunities within the field, says Kolkatabased environmentalist, Subhas Datta. Harish Bhatt, biodiversity scientist, Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru, echoes the sentiment, “The concept is well established abroad and India is not far behind.” There is scope for environmental biologists and also for environmental engineers, modellers and journalists
Environmental scientists are in demand in most industries that have an environmental research and developmental section. These scientists look for ways to control pollution
There is also scope for research in this field. Various universities and governmental organisations conduct research in order to develop methods of controlling pollution. It is also the job of environmental scientists to manage and maintain forests and wildlife. Environmental scientists employed with NGOs help create an awareness about protecting the environment
They also work towards bringing about changes in political policies affecting the environment
Reporting on environmental issues is also on the rise. There are also independent environmental consultants who work with the government’s Central and State Pollution Control Board
If all this excites you, then you need to take up environmental science which is taught as an M.Sc programme
Environmental scientists can take up a Master’s degree in environmental science or an ME in environmental and chemical engineering
There are a few institutions that offer environmental subjects at the B.Sc degree level as well
