Solar panels in Tirupati & other shrines soon: Farooq

Hyderabad: Union minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that the solar photovoltaic panels will be set up at places of worships like Tirupati, Shirdi, Ajmer and Golden temple at Amritsar both to reduce power consumption and create awareness about the importance of renewable energy.
Abdullah said the Centre has taken up the new scheme to establish solar panels in all famous temples in a phased manner in the country. Besides, the Centre had allocated Rs one crore to set up solar systems at all Raj Bhavans, the official residence of Governor. The residences of all chief ministers, ministers and Secretariat and Assembly buildings will also be equipped with solar panels. It will be the beginning to encourage the usage of renewable energy from the government side, he said. Responding to the chief minister K Rosaiah’ request to set up solar energy centre, a testing facility at Fab City, the Union minister assured to do so and recalled that former chief minister Y S Rajasekahra Reddy had also written a letter to him in June requesting to establish the testing centre immediately.
Inaugurating the photovoltaic manufacturing facility at Fab City, Abdullah said he would also take up the issue of reducing customs duty on the components used in the production of solar panels with finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. The Union minister also exuded confidence that by 2020 about 20,000 MW of power would be generated from nonconventional energy.
Earlier, Farooq unveiled logo for “ SOLARCON-India 2009” global conference organised between November 9 to 11.
