PATNA - Potters in Bihar fear a loss of business ahead of the Diwali as customers shift their loyalties to plastic lamps over their earthen products.
For centuries people have been welcoming Lakshmi - the Goddess of wealth by lighting up earthen lamps outside their houses during the Diwali night but now with the changing times, this tradition is slowly fading away.
Many people have now started opting for the less cumbersome and glitzy plastic lamps.
Potters, who eagerly await the onset of the festive season when their sales usually surge, are lamenting a lack of enthusiasm from the buyers this year.
“Due to the rise in demand of plastic items the demand of pottery products has decreased. Earlier there were earthen plates, glasses and cups but now people do not use them as they have found a substitute.
Our business is suffering huge losses and will come to end someday leaving us unemployed,” said Yogendar Pandit, a potter.
The grim situation has forced many potters to take up some other profession for a living.
“If we don’t work elsewhere, our children will die of hunger.
Normally we are able to manage only 50 rupees to 60 rupees.
The government is not taking any notice of the condition of the potters there is no demand for the earthen lamps,” said Surinder Pandit, another potter. (ANI)

CFL lamps to cost Rs.15 each
March 14th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The government will provide energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) at Rs.15 each all over the country, says the head of India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The decision follows the success of two pilot projects to distribute these lamps at a small fraction of their cost and get the rest of the money from developed countries through a UN-mediated scheme called the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), BEE Director General Ajay Mathur said here.

Bihar's award-winning teacher shot dead in classroom
February 16th, 2009 PATNA - A school teacher who had won the President's Award was shot dead while he was teaching in his classroom in a Bihar town Tuesday, the police said. Two IAS officers, 11 others booked in Rs.70 mn scam in Punjab
February 16th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Two Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officers and 11 other state officials have been booked by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau for their alleged involvement in a multi-million septic tanks scam, a vigilance official Tuesday said. The officials are charged with causing a loss of Rs.70 million (Rs.7 crore) to the state by sanctioning use of sub-standard plastic tanks against laid out norms.
Industry wants plastic bags ban to go, court seeks government view
February 10th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the state government to respond to an industry forum's plea for withdrawal of complete ban on plastic carrybags in the capital. The All India Plastic Industry Association (AIPA) in its petition termed the notification was 'unjust' as the court last year asked the government only to increase the minimum permissible thickness of plastic bags from 20 microns to 40 microns - to make it more costly and discourage indiscriminate use - and not completely ban it.
President Patil cautions plastic industry for harming environment
