Green ride gets green light

Mamta Banerjee tried to colour the railways green in her budget on Wednesday announcing that the biggest employer in the country would distribute 2.6 million energy efficient CFL bulbs to its housing colonies and officials.
The move came along with Mamata announcing field trials for environment friendly green toilets the fancy vacuum toilets similar to those used on airplanes and a few coaches. The toilets if used could save thousands of litres of water each day that the railway has to utilize merely for the toilet facilities on its trains.
The move by Railways to also introduce better diesel engines that could save 8-10% fuel costs a large component of its overall operational budget — comes with the support of the Energy Efficiency mission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. The mis
sion, run under the guidance of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Power Ministry.
Railways is one of the designated consumers under the Energy Conservation Act is expected to be one of the key areas where the government could generate large amounts of savings on the demand side.
