Dead man gives new lease of life to seven

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad: Seven people waiting for organ transplants got a fresh lease of life on Tuesday when the family of K Venugopal, a security officer at a jewellery store, declared brain dead, donated his organs. People who had been waiting for kidneys and liver for over two years were beneficiaries of the 30-year-old’s precious organs.
A resident of Uppal, Venugopal was going on a two-wheeler to his father-in-law’s house at Nagarjuna Sagar on April 10 to spend the weekend with his wife. A speeding
car coming from the opposite direction hit him. Venugopal, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown off his vehicle and he suffered critical head injuries. He was rushed to the nearby Kamineni Hospital at L B Nagar.
His family members said that though he battled for life in the ICU for two days, he was declared brain dead on April 12. He is survived by his wife and a 15-month old son Jeevan. While his liver was transplanted in a 50-year-old man who was suffering from hep
atitis infection for the last two and a half years, his kidney saved a 35-year-old woman, a patient of chronic renal failure. She had been on dialysis for the last three years. Both the transplants were done at Kamineni Hospital, which in coordination with Mohan Foundation, facilitated retrieval of his organs.
Another kidney was transplanted in a 47-year-old man who had been on dialysis for the last two and a half years at Global Hospital. Transplant surgeons at these hospitals said that all the receivers are stable. Venugopal’s heart valves were sent to Innova Hospital and eyes to L V Prasad Eye Hospital. Although the family was in deep shock, they were happy that he was going to live in seven others. Venugopal’s wife, Swapna, along with the other family members, wasted no time in giving a consent to donate his organs. Venugopal’s cousin Ganesh remembers him as an extremely energetic and helpful person. “Venu helped several people when he was alive and now, he is helping others in his death too,” said Ganesh.
