Frost & Sullivan: European LED/OLEDs Markets Transitioning From Incandescent to Solid State Lighting Technologies

Frost & Sullivan: European LED/OLEDs Markets Transitioning From Incandescent to Solid State Lighting Technologies

Frost & Sullivan to Host Analyst Briefing on the European LED/OLEDs Markets on Thursday, 13 May 2010

LONDON, May 6, 2010 - Light-Emitting Diode (LED) and Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED)
devices will enhance their presence into the general lighting market,
including residential, retail display outdoor, and off-grid applications,
over the next three years. Despite the economic downturn, these product
markets are poised to exhibit strong growth primarily driven by emergence of
new applications such as automotive, medical and military. Increased
penetration of solid state lighting in many existing applications such as
backlighting and mobile displays will continue to be important; consequently
white LEDs will become a more significant part of the market.

These market developments will be discussed during Frost & Sullivan's
next quarterly Analyst Briefing on the European LED/OLEDs Markets on
Thursday, 13 May 2010, at 15.00 BST.

OLED devices are seen as the next generation of components for lighting
and displays. Whilst challenges such as short life time, high costs and
complexity of manufacturing of OLEDs, efficiency and luminance still remain,
it is expected that the global market for OLEDs will grow at a CAGR of 16%
from 2008 to 2015.

"After the decision made in December 2008, the European Commission
implemented a ban on the sale of 100-watt conventional incandescent light
bulbs from September 1, 2009. All light bulbs of more than 75 watts will be
banned in 2010, followed by 60-watt bulbs in 2011 and 40-watt bulbs in 2012.
Over the coming years about eight billion incandescent light bulbs will be
replaced by energy-efficient solid state alternatives such as LEDs and OLEDs
creating unmatched opportunities for companies in the value chain across all
applications," states Santosh Kumar P, Industry Analyst for Electronic
Devices group.

Highlights of the briefing include analyses of market sizing, crash parts
market sizing, and also component and chemical purchasing.

The briefing will benefit companies who supply components such as
LED/OLED materials, driver ICs and circuits, backplane substrates, etc., and
also manufacturers of FPD screens and power supplies, LED chips, module
suppliers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and resellers of
LEDs/OLEDs products globally.
