New Scientist Environment Blog: Aussie lightbulbs: what's it worth?
New Scientist Environment Blog: Aussie lightbulbs: what's it worth?: "And just this week, the Australian minister for the environment (Malcolm Turnbull, left) announced that his country will phase out incandescent light bulbs in favour of energy-saving fluorescent ones. By 2012, he said, Thomas Edison's ubiquitous tungsten bulbs will no longer be on sale Down Under. Turnbull reckons this will save 800,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. The statement on his site doesn't say explicitely, but I assume he means the equivalent of 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. If so, the cut represents a mere 0.16% of Australia's annual emissions."
