New Scientist Technology Blog: RIP incandescent bulbs: "The incandescent lightbulb's days are numbered. The Financial Times reports today that they will be phased out in Europe by 2009 following an agreement with lightbulb makers to ramp up production of more efficient models. In the EU, over 2 billion incandescent lightbulbs are sold every year, even though more energy efficient bulbs use less than half the energy. The paper says the switch could save almost £5 billion in electricity costs and prevent 23 megatonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. It was recently announced that incandescent bulbs will be banned in Australia from 2012."
